The Importance of Independent Print Management

Increasingly print manufacturers offer business printing management services. Whereas this is not necessarily a bad thing, in some cases it does lead to less than objective advice being given to the client with regard to how the job should be printed. It is not surprising that a print manufacturer will try to keep the job in-house, even if that is not the best solution available.

In addition, whereas a print manufacturer should be able to offer a competitive rate, they're certainly not always in a position to shop around or to negotiate the keenest rate available. And of course manufacturers add their management markup just like any other print management company.

On the other hand there are also a growing number of print management companies that really understand very little about print, let alone the whole process of designing for print and communicating through print.

All Print Manufacturers Great and Small

It is sometimes puzzling why the same print job will vary in cost enormously from one print manufacturer to the next. It can leave the client wondering if they really are comparing like from like.

One of the strengths of print management is in being able to use a wide range of manufacturers to make sure they place the correct job with the correct printer.

Although very few printers will be absolutely transparent about their weaknesses as well as their strengths, all print manufacturers are better and more competitive at certain types of work and not others.

It is simply not true that large manufacturers offer the best rates or that small manufacturers offer the highest levels of service - and a key part of print management is ensuring that all of those variations are taken care of so that the client consistently receives the best job at the best price and with excellent customer care to boot.
